Latest storm will hit Sierra the hardest

Sacramento Bee – 10/19/07

By Niesha Lofing - Bee Staff Writer

While a storm system moving into the Sacramento region isn't expected to release much rain over the city Friday, it will bring extreme winds and snowfall to the Tahoe area.

Overcast skies will enshroud Sacramento, bringing a 30 percent chance of rain.

"If we get some, it will be light rain," said Felix Garcia, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Highs in Sacramento are expected around 68 degrees with lows tonight around 53 degrees, he said. Winds of up to 15 mph are expected.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the Sierra Nevada, however, where the frontal system is expected to bring rain, snow and wind gusts of up to 50 mph.

Snow levels are around 5,000 feet and the mountains could see up to four inches of snow, with heavier snow possible over the passes and ridges, according to an online National Weather Service report.

Highs in Truckee are anticipated around 58 degrees Friday, with a 90 percent chance of rain.

"They'll be getting the bulk of the precipitation," Garcia said.

Sacramento will see increasingly pleasant weather conditions over the weekend, with highs in the low 60s and 70s Saturday, increasing to the mid-70s Sunday, he said.

Patchy fog will likely move into the Sacramento region late Sunday night, but is expected to lift by midday, when highs are expected to reach the low 80s, Garcia said.#
